Community Engagement Coordinator

The Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY) is the oldest and largest organization in New York devoted to organic and sustainable farming and gardening. Our mission: NOFA-NY is an organization of farmers, gardeners, and consumers creating a sustainable regional food system, which is ecologically sound and economically viable. Through demonstration and education, we promote land stewardship, organic food production, and local marketing. NOFA-NY brings consumer and farmer closer together to make high quality food available to all people.

NOFA-NY is seeking a Community Engagement Coordinator to provide direct support of our outreach programs to our members, donors and supporters. Responsibilities for outreach include facilitation of regional efforts across NYS and continued support of our CSA cost-share program. Understanding of member and donor relations by providing superb customer service and accurate data input into a customized CRM system is required to assist in the execution of successful annual fundraising plans and membership campaigns by the Community Engagement Coordinator. As a member of the in-office team in Farmington NY, this position supports all NOFA-NY programs and events by responding to requests from the general public and answering customer questions as needed.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Outreach: Identifies opportunities for regional engagement of community at large; identifies, tracks, and attends (as appropriate) external community events; and, contributes to the development of materials for tabling and outreach.
  • Program Management: Coordinates access to CSA programs for low-income participants and evaluates program success.
  • Fundraising: Assists with development and execution of major donor and fundraising campaigns; oversees quarterly lapsed member communications; and, creates a recognition plan to thank members, volunteers, and presenters.
  • Donor Data Management: Enters data and runs reports through Salesforce Database; reviews and updates member benefits; and, identifies creative ideas for generating and retaining more members.

Qualifications

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong organizational skills, attention to detail and computer skills.
  • Familiarity with event management/fundraising/registration databases or CRM systems.
  • Previous background in a membership-based organization or fundraising campaign preferred.
  • Strong interest in and commitment to promoting the goals of organic and sustainable farming.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Non-profit or fundraising experience helpful.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Crop & Livestock Certification Coordinator

NOFA-NY Certified Organic, LLC is a non-profit, USDA-accredited organic certification agency, whose primary purpose is to provide high integrity organic certification to over 900 organic farmers and processors throughout New York State and surrounding areas.

We have an immediate opening for a full-time Crop & Livestock Certification Coordinator working in our Binghamton, NY office. The starting salary is $30,000 to $35,000 depending on experience along with annual pay increases. Benefits include healthcare, dental and 403(b) as well as generous paid holidays/vacation time. A Certification Coordinator is responsible for the intake and flow of certification applications through the certification process. He/ she must ensure that an application is complete, and monitor is progress through the entire certification process.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Receive, review and process incoming certification applications for completeness.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding the certification process, send out applications, and provide resources and support to farmers as needed.
  • Input and update all necessary information in the appropriate database files as well as the paper file.
  • Prepare initial review letter and send to the producer.
  • Monitor mail and email to ensure requested information is received in a timely manner and is processed appropriately.
  • Perform the annual mailing of applications for renewal, and other producer communication and mailings as necessary.
  • Attend office trainings and meetings, field days, conferences, shadow inspection, and IOIA inspector training.
  • Perform archiving of files as appropriate.
  • Prepare reports as requested.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or 1-3 years experience in certification.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Good writing and communication skills.
  • Good computer skills including a working understanding of data base programs, word processing, and email systems.
  • Able to respond decisively, accurately, confidently, and courteously to client inquiries.
  • Knowledge of organic farming or certification, and familiarity with vegetable, fruit and livestock production systems is desirable.
  • Willing to work occasional irregular hours and travel as needed.

Food Safety Outreach Consultant

NOFA-NY is seeking a Food Safety Outreach Consultant. This is a limited contract position, renewable annually for up to 2 years. This individual will provide support to NOFA-NY’s Food Safety Outreach Program (FSOP) project, “Expanding Food Safety Outreach and Education to Small and Mid-sized Farms in New York and Vermont”. The Consultant will report to the NOFA-NY FSOP Project Director. It is expected that the Consultant will work remotely. Preference to the Hudson Valley.

Required Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Work Experience: Agricultural or food safety work experience; adult learning, curriculum development and teaching methods.
  • Experience in developing and modifying educational materials – curriculum, factsheets, web based training programming.
  • Ability to obtain AFDO certification as a PSA Lead Trainer for Produce Safety Alliance FSMA training courses. (https://producesafetyalliance.cornell.edu/training/train-trainer-course/psa-trainer-and-lead-trainer-process).
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team; work well under pressure; handle multiple tasks at once; and, adapt to changing situations on a daily basis.
  • Must have a strong interest in and commitment to promoting the goals of NOFA-NY.
  • Valid driver’s license. Statewide travel with some overnights.

Preferred Knowledge and Abilities

  • Experience in the implementation of GAPS, Harmonized GAPS or HACCP programs or 3rd part auditing a plus.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred in relevant discipline.
  • Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong organizational skills; and, strong computer skills.

Job Type: Independent Contractor: Averaging 40 hours per month.

Compensation: $2,000.00/month the first year, with possible increase the subsequent year.

Dairy Certification Coordinator Assistant

We have an immediate opening for a full-time Dairy Certification Coordinator Assistant working in our Binghamton, NY office. The starting hourly rate for this entry level positon up to $15.00 depending on experience along with annual pay increases. Benefits include healthcare, dental and 403(b) as well as generous paid holidays/vacation time. Be a part of a growing company working with a dedicated team that supports local organic food and farming.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  •  Answer phone calls as needed and direct to the proper person; make a note of phone call/conversation and updates into database.
  • Help respond to inquiries regarding the certification process, send out applications, and provide resources and support to farmers as needed.
  • Monitor mail and email to ensure requested information is received in a timely manner and is processed appropriately.
  • Participate in the annual mailing of applications for renewal, and other producer communication and mails as necessary.
  • Assist in data entry, and input or other tasks as requested by Certification Coordinators including archiving of files as appropriate.
  • Adapt to duties and priorities between Certification Coordinators to ensure appropriate support is maintained.
  • Follow up deadlines including applications, determination letters etc.
  • Attend office trainings and meetings internally and externally - Field days, shadow inspection, NOFA-NY annual conference, IOIA inspector training.
  • Perform additional duties and work on special projects as requested including providing support to Certification Assistant during peak periods.
 QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associate’s degree in a related field, or 1-3 years experience ideally in organic farming and certification.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Good writing and communication skills.
  • Good computer skills including a working understanding of data base programs, word processing, and email systems.
  • Able to respond decisively, accurately, confidently, and courteously to client inquires.
  • Ability to take direction and ensure follow through.
  • Show initiative in providing support.
  • Knowledge of organic farming or certification, and familiarity with production systems, including vegetable, livestock, and dairy and fruit production is desirable.
  • Willing to work occasional irregular hours and travel as needed.
