Dairy Certification Coordinator Assistant

NOFA-NY Certified Organic, LLC is a non-profit, USDA-accredited organic certification agency, whose primary purpose is to provide high integrity organic certification to over 900 organic farmers and processors throughout New York State and surrounding areas.
 
We have an immediate opening for a full-time Dairy Certification Coordinator Assistant working in our Binghamton, NY office. Annual salary up to $30,000 depending on experience.  Benefits include healthcare, dental and 403(b) as well as generous paid holidays/vacation time. RESPONSIBILITIES:
  •  Answer phone calls as needed and direct to the proper person; make a note of phone call/conversation and updates into database.
  • Help respond to inquiries regarding the certification process, send out applications, and provide resources and support to farmers as needed.
  • Monitor mail and email to ensure requested information is received in a timely manner and is processed appropriately.
  • Participate in the annual mailing of applications for renewal, and other producer communication and mails as necessary.
  • Assist in data entry, and input or other tasks as requested by Certification Coordinators including archiving of files as appropriate.
  • Adapt to duties and priorities between Certification Coordinators to ensure appropriate support is maintained.
  • Follow up deadlines including applications, determination letters etc.
  • Attend office trainings and meetings internally and externally - Field days, shadow inspection, NOFA-NY annual conference, IOIA inspector training.
  • Perform additional duties and work on special projects as requested including providing support to Certification Assistant during peak periods.
 QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associate’s degree in a related field, or 1-3 years experience ideally in organic farming and certification.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Good writing and communication skills.
  • Good computer skills including a working understanding of data base programs, word processing, and email systems.
  • Able to respond decisively, accurately, confidently, and courteously to client inquires.
  • Ability to take direction and ensure follow through.
  • Show initiative in providing support.
  • Knowledge of organic farming or certification, and familiarity with production systems, including vegetable, livestock, and dairy and fruit production is desirable.
  • Willing to work occasional irregular hours and travel as needed.

Organic Fruit Coordinator

The Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY) is the oldest and largest organization in New York dedicated to organic and sustainable farming and gardening.

We are seeking a part time Organic Fruit Coordinator to work with the Education Director and other staff to lead the organization’s outreach, technical assistance and programming to organic fruit farmers. Estimated weekly hours are 20hrs/week.

The position requires a creative and organized self-starter with a background and/or experience in organic fruit farming. The person must be passionate and knowledgeable about organic fruit farming and gardening and have project management experience. This person must also have the ability to obtain AFDO certification as a PSA Lead Trainer for Produce Saftely Alliance FMSA training courses. Responsibilities include providing technical assistance to organic fruit producers, organize workshops and field days and respond to gardener and homesteader inquiries.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Provide technical assistance to fruit farmers and gardeners through phone and email.
  • Provide support for fruit farmers in food safety regulations and implementation of GAPS
  • Coordinate and staff on-farm workshops for the NOFA-NY field day series across NYS.
  • Coordinate all fruit workshops for the annual NOFA-NY winter conference for 1,000+ attendees. Attends and helps staff the conference each year.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with academic institutions, extension programs and trade groups though networking and partnerships.
  • In coordination with the Education Director, set annual education and outreach goals and develop strategies to meet the objectives.

Compensation
50% FTE, $19,344 annually, plus comprehensive benefit package with opportunity to increase.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field, required. Master’s degree in related field, preferred.
  • Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of organic and sustainable agriculture and the educational needs of fruit farmers.
  • Experience: Minimum 5 yrs experience in organic fruit agriculture, additional experience: event/program planning and working with volunteers. Experience in the implementation of GAPS, Harmonized GAPS, or 3rd party auditing.
  • Required Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong organizational skills; strong computer skills.
  • Beneficial Skills: Familiarity with database programs, Spanish language skills.
  • Capabilities: High energy and enthusiasm. Ability to work well in a team and with a wide range of people, work well under pressure, handle multiple tasks at once, and adapt to changing situations on a daily basis.
  • Conditions: Strong interest in and commitment to promoting the goals of NOFA-NY. Frequent statewide travel required during the growing season. Valid driver’s license required.

Organic Farming Outreach and Education Intern

Founded in 1983, NOFA-NY is a statewide organization leading a growing movement of farmers, consumers, gardeners, and businesses committed to promoting sustainable, local, organic food and farming that’s good for people and planet.

We provide education, assistance, and support to regionally-based, sustainable farmers to help them thrive; educate consumers about the value in buying local, organic products; help consumers connect with regionally-based farmers; work to make local, organic food available to all people; and advocate policies that support a sustainable food and farm system.

Overview of Outreach and Educational Support:

  1. Support NOFA-NY’s Educational Programming by coordinating promotion and marketing for outreach activities.
  2. Support organization through research of marketing opportunities across NYS.
  3. Conduct directed market research into relevant areas of policy affecting organic and sustainable producers.
  4. Compile basic organic statistics state wide to use when promoting organic and for project justification for grant writing.
