Communication Coordinator

Position Summary: The Communication Coordinator supports the development and implementation of communication strategies for NOFA-NY. The primary duties of this position include working with all staff to schedule communication deadlines on an editorial calendar; drafting and editing written content; driving all digital communication platforms: website, email marketing, online event registration, and blog; writing and disseminating press releases. As a member of our in-office team, the Communication Coordinator interacts with the general public and supports conference event logistics. This is a full-time position (32-35 hours per week) based in Syracuse or Rochester, NY. Salary for this position is based on experience. Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Community Engagement Director to develop and drive an organization-wide communications/editorial calendar.
  • Coordinate communication planning process for all organizational content areas (educational events, policy and advocacy, membership services, community engagement).
  • Draft and distribute press releases; maintain media contact lists, pitch stories for print, radio and television.
  • Draft, review, revise content to ensure accuracy and uniform tone.
  • Work with key staff to develop compelling content for website and blogs.  Update website regularly.
  • Act as primary contact for website developer to ensure continuous improvement of website.
    • Ensure brand consistency with graphics, language, font, and colors on all digital platforms.
    • Manage Constant Contact email marketing platform to design and send all organizational email communications.
    • Work collaboratively to provide content for social media platforms as needed.
    • Review communication analytics monthly to track trends and inform strategy.
  • Design event registration portal and web pages for all NOFA-NY events including set-up, revisions to existing events, and post-event reporting.
  • Assist in researching, vetting and adopting new event registration system in 2018.
  • Manage communications, tracking and registration for business supporters underwriting, sponsoring and advertising within our events.
  • Provide program support for all major event including fielding calls from the public, providing registration assistance, packing materials, printing coordination etc.
  • Approach requests for additional support with positive and helpful attitude

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree  in Marketing, English, Journalism, or a related communications field preferred, not required
  • Excellent written and verbal skills; strong organizational skills, attention to detail.
  • High energy and enthusiasm. Ability to work well in a team and with a wide range of people, work well under pressure, handle multiple tasks at once, and adapt to changing situations on a daily basis.
  • Familiarity Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, websites management preferred.
  • Familiarity with event management platform or CRM systems helpful.
  • Strong interest in and commitment to promoting the goals of organic and sustainable farming.
  • Non-profit or communications experience helpful.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to sit at computer/desk for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
  • Willingness to occasionally work outside of normal business hours, and staff out-of-town events, including on-farm events that include uneven walking surfaces, exposure to pollen and animal dander.

Organic Fruit Coordinator

ORGANIC FRUIT COORDINATOR

The Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY) is the oldest and largest organization in New York dedicated to organic and sustainable farming and gardening.

We are seeking a part time Organic Fruit Coordinator to work with the Education Director and other staff to lead the organization’s outreach, technical assistance and programming to organic fruit farmers.  Estimated weekly hours are 20hrs/week.

The position requires a creative and organized self-starter with a background and/or experience in organic fruit farming. The person must be passionate and knowledgeable about organic fruit farming and gardening and have project management experience. This person must also have the ability to obtain AFDO certification as a PSA Lead Trainer for Produce Safety Alliance FMSA training courses. Responsibilities include providing technical assistance to organic fruit producers, organize workshops and field days and respond to gardener and homesteader inquiries. 

Specific Responsibilities

  • Provide technical assistance to fruit farmers and gardeners through phone and email.
  • Provide support for fruit farmers in food safety regulations and implementation of GAPS
  • Coordinate and staff on-farm workshops for the NOFA-NY field day series across NYS.
  • Coordinate all fruit workshops for the annual NOFA-NY winter conference for 1,000+ attendees.  Attends and helps staff the conference each year.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with academic institutions, extension programs and trade groups though networking and partnerships.
  • In coordination with the Education Director, set annual education and outreach goals and develop strategies to meet the objectives.

Compensation
50%FTE, TBD based on experience

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field, required.
  • Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of organic and sustainable agriculture and the educational needs of fruit farmers.
  • Experience: Minimum 5 yrs experience in organic fruit agriculture, additional experience: event/program planning and working with volunteers.  Experience in the implementation of GAPS, Harmonized GAPS, or 3rd party auditing.
  • Required Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong organizational skills; strong computer skills.
  • Beneficial Skills:  Familiarity with database programs, Spanish language skills.
  • Capabilities: High energy and enthusiasm. Ability to work well in a team and with a wide range of people, work well under pressure, handle multiple tasks at once, and adapt to changing situations on a daily basis.
  • Conditions: Strong interest in and commitment to promoting the goals of NOFA-NY.  Frequent statewide travel required during the growing season and based in a home office. Valid driver’s license required.

Organic Farming Outreach and Education Intern

Founded in 1983, NOFA-NY is a statewide organization leading a growing movement of farmers, consumers, gardeners, and businesses committed to promoting sustainable, local, organic food and farming that’s good for people and planet.

Overview of Outreach and Educational Support:

  1. Support NOFA-NY’s Educational Programming by coordinating promotion and marketing for outreach activities.
  2. Support organization through research of marketing opportunities across NYS.
  3. Conduct directed market research into relevant areas of policy affecting organic and sustainable producers.
  4. Compile basic organic statistics state wide to use when promoting organic and for project justification for grant writing.

Internship Information:
